It was just after ten pm on a Friday and even though we were guaranteed a rainless night, it hadn't stopped pouring! Ray and me were sitting talking over the weekend's football, at the ready for the seventh telephone call of the day to come in. Before long we received the call from a lovely women on a business excursion who had pulled into the Tesco petrol garage in West Hatch and filled the wrong fuel in a diesel dad's Kia Sedona rental by mistake. She was pretty distressed by the sounds of it, saying "I can't believe that I've messed up the car! I am just so used to putting petrol in my petrol car that I completely forgot I was operating a diesel!" I instructed her to relax and not to fret, and that these things often happen. She managed to maneuver the car into a protected area and, seeing that it was only a few miles from the office, we could get to her swiftly. The bad fuel was drained so she was able to go home to the hotel she was staying at. Despite the fact we got fairly drenched, it was all worth it seeing her drive home calm and less anxious. A fuel drain in Somerset well done in my opinion!

AdBlue is a liquid that is composed of a mix of high-purity urea (32.5%) and deionized water (67.5%). It is certainly devastating to your automobile's fuel system, particularly in cases where you started the car with AdBlue in the fuel tank. The moment the engine has been started the AdBlue will undoubtedly be dragged into the fuel lines and will immediately begin to crystalise, causing catastrophic and costly problems to your car's fuel system.

Wrong Fuel in Car Somerset - Petrol in Diesel Car West Hatch

Now I'm not necessarily that keen on doing the job on weekends, and last week was no different. I had just left the family after eating a fantastic roast cooked by the better half, and I was on the way to deal with a fellow after he had filled the incorrect petrol in his burgundy red Dodge Ram. He was stationed in West Hatch therefore I was there rapidly. As I arrived right behind the car and started work he told me "Thank the Lord! I foolishly had my mind on stuff and didn't perceive I have put the wrong fuel in my petrol vehicle. Have I caused problems by driving it?" I stated generally there should not be any problems and that I'd remove the contaminated fuel right away. Naturally I removed the wrong fuel from the vehicle and filled it with some appropriate fuel, and thus another delighted motorist was able to continue their traveling with no hassle. He could hardly stop saying thanks to me, and this can make working on Sundays in Somerset just a tiny bit easier in my opinion!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
